5/27/2020 Tivo Bolt Hard Drive Upgrade
TiVo Hard Drive Failure Since the hard drive is the primary moving part inside a TiVo, it's the part most likely to fail over time. Even with the special firmware and tweaks on DVR hard drives, most drives don't last longer than four years due to the contant, 24/7 reading and writing. TiVo Bolt OTA - 3 TB Drive for up to 450 HD hours - Upgraded by WeaKnees TiVo's newest DVR, with 4K, Voice Control, and 4 tuners. 180-day parts/labor warranty from WeaKnees. $499.99 - IN STOCK - FREE GROUND SHIPPING.

It seems like opening the unit up and replacing the internal drive is the popular thing to do. I don't recall hearing of anyone using an external drive with the eSATA port.
For those who have done it, here are some questions. Thanks. Is replacing the drive the preferred method?I'm fine cracking it open, but how's this going to affect the warranty?Does it work to image the old drive onto the new one, then expand the partition, or do you have to start over on your recordings?Has anyone used the eSATA port?
Does that work well? Which drive does it fill up first?. Is replacing the drive the preferred method? It is. Case in point: I originally had an external drive for my Series 3. It was a WD drive and for some reason, it died. I have never in my entire computer user/builder/career actually have a HDD die prematurely until then.So I replaced it with an internal 1Tb drive, and it has worked flawlessly ever since.
I recently replaced the fan after it started making some noise, took 10 mins. What I'm trying to say is, go for it!I'm fine cracking it open, but how's this going to affect the warranty? It will affect the warranty. However, the hard drive is usually the first thing to go anyway.Does it work to image the old drive onto the new one, then expand the partition, or do you have to start over on your recordings? If it's like the Roamio, it should automatically format the new drive and then require a reboot. You would of course lose any previous recordings unless you use some software to move them over.Has anyone used the eSATA port? Does that work well? Which drive does it fill up first?See #1.

Additionally, it fills both drives up at the same time by splitting the recording in two. If you disconnect the HDD or it shits the bed, you're up shit's creek with your mouth open.I highly recommend joining and searching/perusing the forums on for more info and guidance.
